Hi! I’m Jack Maico, and welcome to my little corner of the internet.
I started this blog in March 2014, fueled by a simple yet powerful desire: to preserve the memories, stories, and everyday magic of growing up in the Philippines—especially during the golden years of the 1980s and 1990s. My earliest posts were love letters to the past: the toys we played with, the snacks we craved, the TV shows that defined our childhood, the traditions that shaped us, and the moments that still make us smile today.
Over the years, this blog has grown into a collection of reflections—from nostalgic throwbacks, to personal musings, to stories about culture, travel, food, and the vibrant life of being Filipino. It’s a place where memory meets storytelling, where old-school vibes blend with today’s experiences, and where every post is written with heart.
If you’re someone who loves reminiscing, discovering forgotten gems, or simply enjoying the richness of Filipino life, then you’re in the right place. This blog is a journey—one I began more than a decade ago, and one I’m excited to continue with you.
And then there’s the name of this blog: “Ubas na may Cyanide.” It came from a lyric in a song by my favorite OPM band, Radioactive Sago Project. The song, titled “Food Trip,” is a satirical commentary on how Filipinos struggle with skyrocketing prices of basic ingredients—so much so that sometimes we can’t even enjoy our favorite food because inflation keeps getting in the way.
I can’t fully explain the connection between that song and what I write here, but the phrase stuck with me. There’s something about those three words—odd, striking, and a little mysterious—that felt magical. It was unique, memorable, and somehow… it just clicked. It felt like the perfect title for a blog that blends nostalgia, commentary, personal stories, and the quirks of Filipino life.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about the story behind Ubas na may Cyanide. This blog has grown with me—shaped by the memories I treasure, the culture I love, and the conversations I hope to spark. Whether you’re here for nostalgia, curiosity, or just a good read, I’m glad our paths crossed.
So stay a while, explore, reminisce, and enjoy the ride.
From the 80s and 90s all the way to today, there are still so many stories to tell—and I’m excited to share them with you.
